Charlie Chaplin

A fresh, crisp Sloe Gin cocktail with all the elegance of Hollywood, and the antics of Chaplin.

The Charlie Chaplin Cocktail was created at the Waldorf Astoria Bar, sometime between 1910 and 1919, or it may have been a little earlier. The drink celebrates, of course, Charlie Chaplin and is first written up in the 1931 Old Waldorf Bar Days by A. S. Crockett. Although there is very little evidence to confirm or deny that Chaplin drank this drink, he definitely made it into the Waldorf Bar before Prohibition, so it is likely that he was aware of the tipple, and had probably tasted it. One thing that lends a little spice to this crisp mix is the 1921 Chaplin Movie The Idler, the first one that he directed, acted, and wrote. There is a cocktail made as the high point of a scene, and while it is unclear what the bottles are, they fit the shape and colours to be Apricot Brandy and Sloe Gin. It is quite possible that the featured cocktail is in fact the Charlie Chaplin, and having drunk one, I can understand why. Delicious!
