Bittered Sling

< Back to cocktail list

A Short Sharp hit of fine cognac, tempered with bitters and sugar.

This is the year of the cocktail, the year that the word cocktail was first defined in print. The definition was printed on the 13th of May in The Balance, and Columbian Repository, a newspaper printed in Hudson, New York. The definition was “Cock tail, then, is a stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water and bitters it is vulgarly called a bittered sling…”

Our favourite is a combination of Cognac, orange bitters, sugar, and water. It is lightly shaken and served straight up in a champagne saucer. When this drink was first drunk, there were no cocktail glasses, so small wine glasses or champagne saucers were used.
